MASTERCLASS SCULPTING the FULL FIGURE or TORSO with ALEXANDRA SLAVA

€1,025.00

06-10/07/2026

Course Description

I’m pleased to welcome the artist Alexandra Slava from Berlin for an intensive workshop focused on sculpting a full figure or torso.

Representation of the human figure in art is a tradition thousands of years old, reaching back to the earliest cultural expressions of humanity. It is therefore regarded as the pinnacle of figurative sculpture. Working from life is an endlessly rewarding experience and is essential for developing a visual vocabulary and a deeper appreciation of the human form.

This course offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the internal structure and complexity of the human figure in three dimensions. The initial sessions focus on the study of human anatomy and practical exercises designed to help students understand the body’s internal framework before taking on the challenge of sculpting from a live model.

Participants may choose between sculpting a torso at two-thirds life size (excluding the head, neck, arms, and legs) or a full figure at one-third life size from a live model in a classical contrapposto pose.

Emphasis is placed on capturing a convincing gesture, accurate proportions, linear qualities, and volumetric form. Advanced principles of composition and artistic decision-making are introduced to help participants express their individuality and elevate their sculptures to the level of finished artworks. Regular individual critiques, lectures, demonstrations, and group discussions ensure a rich and immersive learning experience.

After completion of the workshop, the torso sculpture may be preserved through firing at an additional cost. The full figure can only be preserved through mold-making and casting, either in the instructor’s Berlin studio or with the assistance of a local mold maker or bronze foundry.

Key Working Objectives

  • Studying human anatomy as a foundation for figurative sculpture

  • Building an understanding of the body’s internal structure and balance

  • Sculpting directly from a live model

  • Developing accurate observation and measurement skills

  • Translating anatomical knowledge into three-dimensional form

  • Exploring gesture, rhythm, and movement in sculpture

What to expect

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Construct a coherent sculptural figure based on anatomical principles

  • Capture convincing gesture, proportion, and volume

  • Apply compositional and artistic decision-making strategies

  • Demonstrate improved spatial awareness and form articulation

  • Develop greater confidence in sculpting from life

  • Produce a resolved torso or full-figure sculpture

Limited places ( max. 6 persons) for all levels. The course will be given in English.
